Waivers

Your shipment may require a certificate of exemption or other special documentation. Certain African countries require certificates of exemption before the cargo arrives at the port of delivery.

Certificates of exemption (also known as ECTN - Electronic Cargo Tracking Note) are required by certain African countries to control, supervise and effectively manage the import / export traffic to the country.

The cargo exemption documents have all the details of the exporter / importer, the shipping method (containerized, groupage, etc.), the type and value of the goods being transported, the name of the vessel and the freight cost of the vessel. These exemptions are treated by the importer or exporter and must be submitted before the cargo arrives at its port of discharge.

If you are shipping to, or through one of the countries below, your cargo may need a waiver certificate document to clear customs and avoid costly fines / seizures.

VGM

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has amended the Convention on the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) to require, as a condition for loading a full container in a ship for export, that the container has verified the gross weight. This change will affect the entire containerized shipping industry.

The shipper is responsible for obtaining the verified gross weight of a full container and communicating it to the shipping company.

According to the SOLAS amendment, containers with incorrectly declared weight have an important impact on the stability of ships, trucks and terminal equipment. This can pose a serious threat to the safety of industry workers and even endanger their lives.

All containers to which CSC (International Convention for Safe Containers) are applied must be weighed, stowed in a vessel that, according to the Administration, is subject to the SOLAS Convention Chapter VI.
Since July 1, 2016 it will be a violation of the SOLAS to load a full container onto a ship if the ship operator and the terminal operator do not have the verified gross weight of the container.

The shipper (SHIPPER) is responsible for providing the verified weight.

If a container arrives at the port without a verified weight it can not be loaded on a vessel.

In the following link, you can consult the frequently asked questions about the verified gross weight:
FAQ

IMO Classification

The dangerous goods or IMO (International Maritime Organization) are those that, due to their properties and characteristics, represent a risk for the safety and health of people.

Dangerous goods are classified into 9 different categories, according to their characteristics and degree of danger. It should be noted that the numbering order of the classes is not related to the magnitude of the risk, therefore, a class 1 merchandise (explosives) could be equal or more dangerous than a class 7 merchandise (radioactive), since its danger depends directly on technical and / or chemical factors.

For a container to transport IMO merchandise, they must carry labels on all four sides, which must indicate class and IMO number, according to the following list:

  • Class 1. Explosives
  • Class 2. Gases
  • Class 3. Flammable liquids
  • Class 4. Flammable solids
  • Class 5. Oxidizers and organic peroxides
  • Class 6. Toxic
  • Class 7. Radioactive material
  • Class 8. Corrosives
  • Class 9. Diverse dangerous objects

TARIC

To classify a merchandise as a tariff is to assign it one of the codes of the integrated tariff of the European Community (TARIC).
TARIC is composed of the tariff nomenclature (composed of chapters, headings and subheadings) and tariff duties (the tax assigned to each of the headings and subheadings).
